Changing your society's name

How to request a change, and what's required

New legislation for incorporated societies

Between 5 October 2023 and 5 April 2026 there are 2 Acts in force.

If your society —

  • registered for the first time on or after 5 October 2023, the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 (2022 Act) applies.
  • registered before 5 October 2023 and has reregistered since then, the 2022 Act applies.
  • registered before 5 October 2023 and has not yet reregistered, the Incorporated Societies Act 1908 (1908 Act) applies.

An incorporated society can apply to the Registrar to change its name. Before deciding on a new name, be sure that you can use it.

To change your society’s name, you need to follow the same process as that for changing your rules. This is because a society’s name is established by its rules – in fact, it’s the first rule of an incorporated society.

If, however, you only want to add macrons to your society’s name you don’t need to change your rules — you can just ask us to update the register and issue a new certificate of incorporation (see below).

Adding macrons to your society’s name

In 2019 we made changes to our register system so that it's possible to record macrons in names. If your society’s registered name should have always included macrons, you can ask us to change your name on the register and issue a new certificate of incorporation. You don't need to change your rules to add macrons, just complete our request form and send it to us – our addresses are on the form.

The information below applies to all societies, no matter which Act they're currently registered under.

A name change doesn’t affect the rights or liabilities of the incorporated society, and doesn't affect legal proceedings by, or against, the society. Legal proceedings taken against the society under its former name may be continued against it under its new name.
