Objecting to the restoration of a society to the register

New legislation for incorporated societies

Between 5 October 2023 and 5 April 2026 there are two Acts in force

The Incorporated Societies Act 2022 (2022 Act) applies if your society —

  • registered for the first time on or after 5 October 2023, or
  • registered before 5 October 2023 and has reregistered since then.

The Incorporated Societies Act 1908 (1908 Act) applies if your society registered before 5 October 2023 and has not yet reregistered.

Any person may object to the restoration of a society from the Incorporated Societies Register.

When to lodge an objection

Your objection must be lodged within the period stated in the public notice.

You need to explain your reason for objecting. You must also supply copies of any evidence you have to support your objection.

How to lodge an objection online

You will need:

  • a RealMe® login, and
  • an online account with us.

Step by step

  1. Log in to the Incorporated Societies Register.
  2. Search for the society then select the society’s name to view its details.
  3. Go to the ‘Maintain Incorporated Society’ menu and select ‘Lodge Other Document’.
  4. Select ‘Objection to Restoration’
  5. Upload your written objection and any supporting documentation.
  6. Submit your objection.

What happens next

We will review your objection. If it is accepted, the Registrar will suspend the restoration of the society. We will email you to advise how long that suspension will last.

We will also email the person who applied for the restoration to let them know that we have received an objection.
